The Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU) is a branch of the Pennsylvania Department of Education, and is the largest of the 29 intermediate units in Pennsylvania. It was created by the state’s General Assembly in 1971, and is headquartered in Homestead.

At the AIU, we pride ourselves on our team of caring educators, administrators, and support staff who work tirelessly to support children, adults, and families in the county. As a liaison with the Pennsylvania Department of Education, we operate three special education schools, nine Blue Ribbon-Certified family centers, and 130 programs that offer support and resources to those in need.
