Biography

Athens Tango Project is an Argentine tango music band founded in 2012 in the city of Athens, Georgia by Laura Camacho, a Double bass musician from Buenos Aires, featuring Monique Osorio on vocals, John Phillips on drums, John Cooper on violin, and Matt M Vu, David Marcus, on piano. The extended lineup includes Keiko Ishibashi, Franziska Brunner, Teresa Grynia, Curran Pendergrast, Bill Oglesby, Daniel Allen, James Perkins, Jaime Antonio Cardenas Espana, Serena Scibelli, Fernando Deddos, and Ricardo Hurtado.

After a decade in the Athens, Ga., music scene, Athens Tango Project released its first EP on Jan. 18, 2023. Dubbed “Para Compartir” (To Be Shared), the eclectic and ambitious EP is a testament of their mastery of the intricate nuances of tango music, and also offers fresh and energizing versions of classics with dancers in mind.

The EP, directed and produced by Camacho, includes among others a symphonic tango, Tanguera, performed by four instruments; a masterful nuevo tango Piazzolla piece - a stripped Oblivion that brings forward the essence of the composition; and another favorite of Camacho’s: Drive composed by REM, which includes a guest vocalist and moves effortlessly between a new tango bass line, rock, and jazz. After listening to the EP and performing with her, Emiliano Messiez, a prolific composer and a pianist for the Broadway hit show "Forever Tango," says of founder and producer Laura Camacho “We are in the presence of a bass player who really knows the Tango style like not many.” Grammy Award-nominated musician and producer Pablo Aslan describes Camacho as, “one of the movers and shakers in the US tango scene” and as “an excellent bass player and a passionate tanguer
