Byzantium were an English rock band of the 1970s who released three albums and performed one Peel Session. They are perhaps best remembered for their role in the early careers of Shane Fontayne, Chaz Jankel and Robin Sylvester.
Channel description
Ora was a UK band formed by Jamie Rubinstein in 1968 which disbanded in 1969 after producing one debut album, the eponymous Ora. Along with Jamie (guitar) other band members were Robin Sylvester (guitar/production), Julian Diggle (drums), and floater Jon Weiss (lead guitar). In 1970 Jamie formed Byzantium which initially had a fluid line-up but eventually settled with Jamie Rubinstein (guitar), Robin Lamble (bass/vocals), Steve Corduner (drums), and Mick Barakan [aka Shane Fontayne] (guitar/vocals). Byzantium released 3 albums: 1972 Byzantium, 1973 Seasons Changing, 1974 Live & Studio. In 2019 High Time, a compilation of previously unrecorded live performances was released. A 5 CD box set "Byzantium, Halfway Dreaming , Anthology 1969 - 1975" from Cherry Records is scheduled for release January 29, 2021.
