栃木県立美術館は、日本における公立の近現代美術館の先駆けとして、1972（昭和47）年に開館しました。コレクションは栃木県を中心とする国内の近現代美術やフランス、イギリス、ドイツ等西欧の近現代美術作品を要に、版画、挿絵本、写真、工芸を含め9000点近くに及びます。
学芸員独自の視点による展覧会を含め、企画展を年間４～５回開催し、コレクション展においても年間４回テーマを設定して展示替をしています。
