The New York Athletic Club is a private social and sports club in New York state. Founded in 1868, the club has approximately 8,600 members and two facilities: the City House, located at 180 Central Park South in Manhattan, and Travers Island, located in Westchester County. Membership in the club is by invitation only.
Channel description
The New York Athletic Club was founded in 1868 with the intent of bringing structure to the world of amateur athletics. From those early endeavors evolved the Amateur Athletic Union and the American Olympic Committee (now known as the US Olympic Committee).
Concurrently, the NYAC committed to supporting athletes in their bids to compete at the highest levels. In the early days, legends such as Ray Ewry and Matt McGrath competed for the NYAC with great success. Later came celebrated names such as Jackson Scholz, Al Oerter and Bruce Baumgartner. Today, the NYAC's commitment to supporting athletes at the highest levels is as steadfast as ever. Fifty five NYAC members competed at the 2012 Olympic Games in London; 17 of them won medals. Sixty-eight members contested the 2016 Rio Olympic Games; 21 secured medals.
