Biography
Pizzicato Five was a Japanese pop band formed in Tokyo in 1984 by multi-instrumentalists Yasuharu Konishi and Keitarō Takanami. While it began as a quintet, after personnel changes in the late 1980s the band gained international fame as a duo consisting of Konishi and vocalist Maki Nomiya. With their music blending together 1960s pop, jazz and synth-pop, the group were a prominent component in the Shibuya-kei movement of the 1990s.

1984年、小西康陽、高浪敬太郎、鴨宮諒、佐々木麻美子によって結成。翌年、細野晴臣プロデュースにより12インチシングル「オードリィ・ヘプバーン・コンプレックス」でデビュー。1987年、鴨宮諒、佐々木麻美子が脱退。1988年から1990年までオリジナル・ラヴの田島貴男が在籍。1990年、野宮真貴がヴォーカリストとして加入。1994年、高浪敬太郎が脱退し、小西と野宮のユニットとなる。
「スウィート・ソウル・レヴュー」「東京は夜の七時」「ベイビィ・ポータブル・ロック」など、ヒット曲を数多く生み出し、90年代に日本の音楽シーンを席巻した「渋谷系」アーティストのひとつとして支持を得た。
また、1994年5月にはシングル「5×5」でアメリカ・デビュー、秋に発売したアルバム「Made In USA」のセールスは全世界で20万枚を突破。1995年2月(アメリカ10都市、ヨーロッパ4都市)、1997年9月(アメリカ14都市)に2度のワールドツアーを敢行した。
その後も意欲作を次々と発表し、精力的な活動を続けたが、2001年3月31日にベスト・アルバム第3集「Pizzicato Five R.I.P. Big Hits and Jet Lags 1998-2001」をリリースし、その長い歴史に幕を下ろした。
