1973年3月25日、シングル『かくれんぼ』でデビュー。『津軽海峡・冬景色』で第19回日本レコード大賞歌唱賞を、『波止場しぐれ』で第27回日本レコード大賞最優秀歌唱賞を、以降も『天城越え』『風の盆恋歌』『夫婦善哉』と数々のヒット曲を送り出すなど、長年に渡り多くのファンを魅了してきた。その他、文化庁芸術祭(第56回:優秀賞『石川さゆり音楽会』/第62回:大賞『石川さゆり音楽会~歌芝居 飢餓海峡~』)や、第68回芸術選奨・大衆芸能部門文部科学大臣賞(平成29年度)、紫綬褒章(令和元年)の受賞を果たすなど、名実ともに日本の歌謡界を牽引している。
