1973年3月25日、シングル『かくれんぼ』でデビュー。『津軽海峡・冬景色』で第19回日本レコード大賞歌唱賞を、『波止場しぐれ』で第27回日本レコード大賞最優秀歌唱賞を、以降も『天城越え』『風の盆恋歌』『夫婦善哉』と数々のヒット曲を送り出すなど、長年に渡り多くのファンを魅了してきた。その他、文化庁芸術祭（第56回：優秀賞『石川さゆり音楽会』/第62回：大賞『石川さゆり音楽会～歌芝居 飢餓海峡～』）や、第68回芸術選奨・大衆芸能部門文部科学大臣賞（平成29年度）、紫綬褒章（令和元年）の受賞を果たすなど、名実ともに日本の歌謡界を牽引している。
